# House Republicans remove Cheney as conference chair

On 12 May 2021 House Republicans voted to strip [Liz Cheney](/people/liz-cheney) of her role as chair of the Republican conference after she repeatedly rejected [Donald Trump](/people/mig-donald-trump)'s false claim that the 2020 election had been stolen. Cheney had easily survived an earlier attempt to remove her, helped at the time by backing from other party leaders.
