# Magyar government cuts state-linked funding that sustained MCC Brussels

Date: 2026

On 31 August 2026, The Guardian reported that MCC Brussels, the Brussels offshoot of the Orbán-funded [Mathias Corvinus Collegium](/organizations/mathias-corvinus-collegium), had effectively ceased operations after its funding stopped following [Péter Magyar](/people/peter-magyar)'s election victory; staff had not been paid in July or August and executive director Frank Furedi resigned. Magyar had promised to end state financing for MCC and to investigate a large transfer of state assets to it. The decision targeted a funding relationship rather than speech: the institution remained free to seek private backing, while the state stopped financing the Brussels operation through the previous arrangement.

Supporters of the decision described it as ending political patronage built under Fidesz. Critics said a new government should not use control of public money to punish institutions identified with its opponents. The accountability question is whether the same transparent standards are applied to institutions aligned with Tisza. The decision is relevant to Hungary's post-Orbán institutional transition because public financing, ideological networks and state-linked foundations were central to earlier concerns about political entrenchment.
