# Hungary creates a consolidated media authority and council

Date: 2010

In 2010 Parliament created the [National Media and Infocommunications Authority](/organizations/nmhh) and a Media Council with Fidesz-elected leadership, a foundational media-capture statute still operating in the catalog years. Later advertising and ownership concentration compounded it.

Hungary’s post-2010 media framework created a powerful regulator and Media Council in a political environment dominated by the governing majority. European rule-of-law reporting has repeatedly examined regulator independence, state advertising, public-service media and pluralism. The relevant pathway is durable regulatory leverage over licensing, sanctions and market conditions. Later ownership consolidation and disputes involving independent broadcasters are separate dated events and should not be collapsed into this fact.
