# Tisza wins Hungary's parliamentary election and ends Orbán's rule

Date: 2026

Tisza won Hungary's 12 April 2026 parliamentary election, ending [Viktor Orbán](/people/mig-actor-viktor-orban)'s long tenure and giving [Péter Magyar](/people/peter-magyar) the mandate to form a government. Tisza secured 141 of the 199 seats in the [National Assembly](/organizations/national-assembly), a two-thirds majority, according to results reported by the BBC. The result followed Magyar's rapid transformation from a former establishment insider into the leader of the strongest opposition movement to Fidesz.

Its institutional significance is the transfer of national power through a competitive vote after years of disputes between Budapest and European institutions over [judicial independence](/drivers/justice-judicial-independence-erosion), media pluralism, public procurement and checks on the executive. The result did not itself resolve those disputes; it created the opportunity to test whether the new government would change the rules under which political power had been concentrated. Reuters described the election as a landmark defeat for Orbán. Later policy decisions, rather than the victory alone, determine whether the change strengthens durable democratic competition.
