# The Knesset enacts the Nation-State Basic Law

## The fact

On 19 July 2018 the Knesset enacted Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People, with [Netanyahu](/people/benjamin-netanyahu) as prime minister.

## Context

The law demoted Arabic’s status and declared Jewish settlement a national value. Druze and Arab MKs protested. Neighbouring embassy opening is a different 2018 file. He did not sit as a High Court justice.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 19 July 2018 enactment of the Nation-State Basic Law, independently reported.

Not established: a unique later income-gap coefficient for Arab citizens from that sitting, or that every later settlement was this statute.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, a later repeal, a court that vacated the instrument, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.
