## The fact

On 27 September 2020 three farm laws — on trade and commerce, price assurance and farm services, and essential commodities — received presidential assent after a monsoon-session passage.

## Context

Farmers’ unions, especially in Punjab and Haryana, rejected the laws as a weakening of the APMC and MSP system. [Modi](/people/narendra-modi)’s government owned the bills. He did not sit as every mandi secretary. The 2021 repeal is a neighbouring later instrument.
