# IRS starts monthly advance Child Tax Credit payments

The [Internal Revenue Service](/organizations/gov-irs) sent the first monthly advance Child Tax Credit payments to families on 15 July 2021. The payments were authorised by the American Rescue Plan, which expanded the credit and allowed part of it to be paid to eligible families in monthly instalments during the year.
