# Jakobsdóttir joins Icelandic women's strike

On 24 October 2023 Prime Minister [Katrín Jakobsdóttir](/people/katrin-jakobsdottir) joined a nationwide women's strike in Iceland, the kvennafrí or women's day off, protesting the gender pay gap and gender-based violence. It was the country's first full-day women's strike since 1975, and about 100,000 people joined it.
