# Joan abjures under the Rouen process, then is held in a relapse trap

Date: 1431

## The fact

On 24 May 1431 Joan abjured at Rouen. Within days the court treated her as relapsed, a finding that opened the way to the 30 May burning. This Fact stores the abjuration-and-trap sequence, not the fire itself.

## Context

Abjuration under a pyre threat is not a free theological seminar.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Historial officiality narrative and Britannica independently date 24 May 1431.

Official or archival record: Historial Jeanne d’Arc — Rouen (https://www.historial-jeannedarc.fr/en/; Historial Jeanne d’Arc / Rouen).

## Significance

Procedural-injustice path. High confidence on the abjuration date.

A signature under threat is not a conversion. Do not preach it as one.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 24 May 1431 abjuration and subsequent relapse finding. Not established: a modern psychiatric file, or that she authored the cemetery script.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
