# French colonial and mission rhetoric uses Jeanne d’Arc as a civilising-war emblem

Date: 1900

## The fact

Around 1900 French colonial education, missions and military rhetoric used Jeanne d’Arc as a symbol of armed Catholic France abroad. This Fact stores that use of the name, not a 1429 African campaign that did not occur.

## Context

Canonization politics and empire overlapped. 1920 did not create the colonial use and did not end it. Split Vatican paper from imperial pedagogy.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Library of Congress print and poster holdings as a public carrier and Britannica’s biography as independent frame describe a globally exported saint-warrior image.

Official or archival record: Library of Congress (https://www.loc.gov/; Library of Congress).

## Significance

Imperial-pedagogy path. Medium confidence on any one colony’s curriculum; high that the rhetoric existed in public.

A mission poster is not Orléans. Do not rebate empire with a siege lift.

## What is established and what is not

Established: colonial and mission uses of Joan as a French war-saint emblem. Not established: that she authorised a colonial statute.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
