# Gallica and later digital libraries put Joan trial editions on a public URL

Date: 1997

## The fact

By the late 1990s Gallica was publishing public digital copies of Jeanne d’Arc trial editions and related prints.

## Context

Digital libraries freeze one scan and open search. Both are true. Quicherat 1841 is the print predecessor stored separately.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Gallica’s public portal and the BnF independently operate the scans. Britannica remains the independent biographical frame.

Official or archival record: Gallica — Bibliothèque nationale de France (https://gallica.bnf.fr/; Bibliothèque nationale de France).

## Significance

Knowledge-access path. High confidence on public URLs.

A URL is not Rouen’s fire. Do not back-date 1997 into 1431.

## What is established and what is not

Established: public digital trial editions on Gallica. Not established: that page views changed a justice indicator that year.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
