# Nineteenth-century French nationalism militarises Joan as a usable patriotic statue

Date: 1878

## The fact

In the later nineteenth century, especially after 1870, French public monuments and school rhetoric militarised [Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) as a national sword. This Fact stores that reception. It is not the 1429 Loire campaign.

## Context

A statue can fund a city square and can teach revenge. The catalog already stored Orléans as a siege relief.

Joan of Arc is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Museum collections of nineteenth-century Joan imagery and Britannica’s reception notes independently describe the nationalist cult.

Official or archival record: Metropolitan Museum of Art (https://www.metmuseum.org/; Metropolitan Museum of Art).

## Significance

Polarisation path. High confidence that the cult existed; medium on any one election coefficient.

A statue is not a sortie. Keep 8 May 1429 unmerged.

## What is established and what is not

Established: nineteenth-century nationalist militarisation of Joan’s name. Not established: that 1429 was already a Third Republic programme.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
