# English occupation authorities use the Rouen court as an anti-Valois legitimacy weapon

Date: 1431

## The fact

Through early 1431 the Rouen process functioned as English occupation policy against the Valois restoration that Joan had served.

## Context

A show of heresy can be both sincere for some clerks and instrumental for officers. Store the political function without a cartoon of every Dominican as a spy.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Historial interpretation of the officiality and Britannica independently frame the trial as politically English.

Official or archival record: Historial Jeanne d’Arc — Rouen (https://www.historial-jeannedarc.fr/en/; Historial Jeanne d’Arc / Rouen).

## Significance

Legitimacy-attack path. High confidence on occupation interest; medium on any one clerk’s inner motive.

A smear of a coronation is not the coronation. 17 July 1429 stands.

## What is established and what is not

Established: English authorities used the Rouen heresy process against Valois legitimacy. Not established: that every article of accusation was ghost-written in London.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
