## The fact

On 8 May 1429 the English siege of Orléans ended after a sequence of sorties and the arrival of a Valois relief force in which Joan served as a public captain.

## Context

A siege is a hunger machine. Ending it is a welfare-relevant military act. Civilian cost of the assaults is not deleted by the date of relief; Paris 1429 is a separate worsening row.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
