# Charles VII is crowned at Reims after the 1429 campaign in which Joan served

Date: 1429

## The fact

On 17 July 1429 Charles VII was crowned in Reims Cathedral. Joan was present in the campaign that made the rite possible.

## Context

English propaganda treated Charles as the so-called king of Bourges. A Reims anointing was the medieval public answer. UNESCO’s later listing of the cathedral is a different knowledge-access Fact.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

UNESCO’s Reims file and the cathedral’s public history independently date the coronation function of the building; Britannica carries 17 July 1429 as the act.

Official or archival record: UNESCO — Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Former Abbey of Saint-Rémi and Palace of Tau, Reims (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/601/; UNESCO World Heritage Centre).

## Significance

Political-legitimacy path. High confidence on the date.

A crown is not a siege lift. Orléans remains the food-and-arms row.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Charles VII crowned at Reims 17 July 1429 after the Loire campaign including Joan. Not established: that coronation created a modern republic, or that Joan was the consecrator.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
