# UNESCO lists the Reims cathedral complex that staged the 1429 coronation

Date: 1991

## The fact

In 1991 UNESCO listed the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the former Abbey of Saint-Rémi and the Palace of Tau at Reims. The listing is a late public-knowledge instrument around the same building as the 1429 coronation.

## Context

A listing can tourist-ify and can conserve. 1429 remains a separate legitimacy Fact.

[Joan of Arc](/people/joan-of-arc) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The UNESCO list page is the official instrument. UNESCO’s general portal independently frames World Heritage as a public programme.

Official or archival record: UNESCO — Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Former Abbey of Saint-Rémi and Palace of Tau, Reims (https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/601/; UNESCO World Heritage Centre).

## Significance

Heritage-access path. High confidence on the 1991 listing.

A plaque is not a crown. Keep 1429 and 1991 unmerged.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1991 Reims UNESCO listing. Not established: that Joan authored a nomination, or that listing reversed 1431.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
