# Electoral authorities removed the last remaining opposition party from the ballot

Date: 2021

On August 6, Nicaragua's Supreme Electoral Council stripped the remaining opposition party Citizens for Liberty of its legal personality ahead of the November election. The EU's foreign-policy chief said the action eliminated remaining credible electoral competition, while the Council of the EU separately cited arbitrary delisting of opposition parties and exclusion of candidates as serious democratic violations.
