# U.S. imposes first Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods

On 6 July 2018 the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative under [Robert Lighthizer](/people/robert-lighthizer) began imposing 25% tariffs on about $34 billion of Chinese imports after its Section 301 investigation into Chinese trade practices. China retaliated with tariffs on the same value of U.S. goods, and the administration then moved to target a further $200 billion of imports.
