# Linnaeus issues Peter Artedi’s Ichthyologia after the friend’s drowning in Amsterdam

Date: 1738

## The fact

In 1738 [Carl Linnaeus](/people/carl-linnaeus) saw Peter Artedi’s Ichthyologia into print after Artedi drowned in an Amsterdam canal in 1735, an edition that saved the work and placed Linnaeus as the living broker of his friend’s fishes. Artedi had been the intended fish author of the Systema project.

## Context

Dutch years were a cluster of young men around Clifford and Leiden. Without Linnaeus the Ichthyologia might have vanished. That is not a reason to hide the editorial power. No court named a thief. None is invented. Do not treat later fish taxonomy as this 1738 title page.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Linnean Society at https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus records Artedi as the close friend and fish specialist of the Dutch years. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carolus-Linnaeus independently places Artedi in the early collaboration.

Official or archival record: Linnean Society — Who was Linnaeus? (https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus; The Linnean Society of London).

## Significance

High confidence that Linnaeus issued the 1738 Ichthyologia.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Linnaeus published Artedi’s Ichthyologia in 1738 after the 1735 drowning. Not established: a legal finding that he stole the fishes. Contribution is recorded as He edited and published Artedi’s fish manuscript. Artedi had drowned; Clifford and Amsterdam friends sat nearby. Complex. The impact note is Control of a dead colleague’s masterwork is a due-process-of-credit path: the survivor’s name frames the fish book. The dated heading stays Linnaeus issues Peter Artedi’s Ichthyologia after the friend’s drowning in Amsterdam on 1738-01-01, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

The attached driver is justice-[judicial-independence](/drivers/justice-judicial-independence-erosion)-erosion. The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Artedi’s book is not Systema 1735 as a second Fact. Mixed effects of Linnaeus issues Peter Artedi’s Ichthyologia after the friend’s drowning in Amsterdam are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Linnaeus issues Peter Artedi’s Ichthyologia after the friend’s drowning in Amsterdam. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1738-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
