# Linnaeus is ennobled as Carl von Linné

Date: 1762

## The fact

In 1761–62 [Carl Linnaeus](/people/carl-linnaeus) was ennobled as Carl von Linné, taking a coat of arms with three kingdoms of nature, a crown act that placed the classifier inside Sweden’s estate hierarchy. He had sought honour as well as received it. A botanist as von Linné is a different public object from a commoner professor.

## Context

Swedish science used noble rank as pay and protection. [Democratic-resilience](/drivers/democratic-resilience) here means a civic scientific public versus estate absorption, not a claim that 1762 Sweden was a democracy Linnaeus betrayed. The crown shared the act. Sharing does not erase acceptance. Do not treat later Swedish parliamentary reform as this patent of nobility.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## Evidence and sources

Linnean Society at https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus records the ennoblement as Carl von Linné. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carolus-Linnaeus independently dates the nobility.

Official or archival record: Linnean Society — Who was Linnaeus? (https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus; The Linnean Society of London).

## Significance

Democratic-resilience path of modest weight. High confidence on the ennoblement. The Uppsala chair remains an improving health-teaching row.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Linnaeus was ennobled as von Linné in the early 1760s. Not established: that nobility uniquely caused later racial uses of his table. Contribution is recorded as He accepted nobility. The Swedish crown granted it; the estate order was not his invention. The impact note is Absorbing a famous scientist into the noble estate is a democratic-resilience weakening path: knowledge as rank, not as a civic office. The dated heading stays Linnaeus is ennobled as Carl von Linné on 1762-04-04, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is democratic-resilience. The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Nobility is not the 1741 professorship. Mixed effects of Linnaeus is ennobled as Carl von Linné are separate paths.

Shared responsibility is part of Linnaeus is ennobled as Carl von Linné. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1762-04-04 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
