# Linnaeus takes a Harderwijk medical doctorate and opens the Dutch publishing years

Date: 1735

## The fact

In June 1735 [Carl Linnaeus](/people/carl-linnaeus) received a medical doctorate at the University of Harderwijk in the Dutch Republic, a quick degree that let him enter Leiden’s learned market. Jan Frederik Gronovius and Isaac Lawson would underwrite the first Systema. Those patrons are named, not erased.

## Context

Swedish students often took cheap Dutch degrees. Harderwijk was notorious for speed. The move still placed Linnaeus inside the Batavian print world where Systema, Fundamenta, and Genera Plantarum could appear. Olof Rudbeck the Younger had been the Uppsala teacher; he did not sign the Dutch diploma. Do not treat later Swedish knighthood as this MD.

## Evidence and sources

Linnean Society at https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus dates the Dutch years from the Harderwijk degree. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carolus-Linnaeus independently places Harderwijk and Leiden patronage in 1735.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Linnaeus took a Harderwijk MD in 1735. Not established: that the thesis was a major medical discovery, or that he uniquely invented binomials that summer. Contribution is recorded as He defended a short medical thesis at Harderwijk. Dutch patrons then paid for Systema Naturae. The impact note is A Dutch MD was the ticket into Leiden print, a modest education-access path for the Systema that followed. The dated heading stays Linnaeus takes a Harderwijk medical doctorate and opens the Dutch publishing years on 1735-06-23, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Harderwijk is not Systema Naturae’s first sheet. Mixed effects of Linnaeus takes a Harderwijk medical doctorate and opens the Dutch publishing years are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Linnaeus takes a Harderwijk medical doctorate and opens the Dutch publishing years. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1735-06-23 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
