# Linnaeus becomes first president of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Date: 1739

## The fact

In 1739 [Carl Linnaeus](/people/carl-linnaeus) was among the founders of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm and served as its first president. It is not Uppsala University and not the London Linnean Society of 1788, which he did not found. The academy was to serve useful science for the Swedish state: mines, fish, crops, medicine. A learned society is a cohesion path among elites, not a democratic assembly.

## Context

Sweden’s Hats and Caps politics wanted economic science. Linnaeus’s useful-plants ideology fitted. He had just practised medicine in Stockholm and married Sara Elisabeth Moraea. Sharing founders does not erase the first presidency. Do not treat later Nobel-era KVA as this 1739 room.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

KVA history at https://www.kva.se/en/the-academy/history/ is the official academy account. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carolus-Linnaeus independently notes Linnaeus’s role in the 1739 academy.

## Significance

Cohesion path of modest weight. High confidence on founding presidency.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1739 KVA is not the 1788 Linnean Society in London. Mixed effects of Linnaeus becomes first president of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Linnaeus was first president of the 1739 Swedish Academy of Sciences. Not established: that he wrote later academy statutes of the twentieth century. Contribution is recorded as He was founding president. Other Stockholm men of science and the estate-state shared the academy. Complex. The impact note is A national scientific academy with a botanist as first president is a cohesion instrument for useful knowledge, not a parliament. The dated heading stays Linnaeus becomes first president of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on 1739-06-02, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

Shared responsibility is part of Linnaeus becomes first president of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1739-06-02 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
