# Daniel Solander sails on Cook’s Endeavour as a Linnaean collector

Date: 1768

## The fact

On 26 August 1768 HMS Endeavour left Plymouth with Daniel Solander, Uppsala-trained pupil of [Carl Linnaeus](/people/carl-linnaeus), as naturalist beside Joseph Banks, to collect plants and animals on a Pacific imperial voyage. Sailors, servants, and indigenous informants supplied the labour of gathering. Linnaeus stayed in Uppsala and still owned the intellectual programme of naming what arrived.

## Context

The ‘apostles’ were a correspondence-and-student empire, not a formal colonial office. Banks paid; the Admiralty commanded; Linnaeus had taught the method. Sharing those names is required. Sharing is not a reason to drop the teacher. Later NHM cabinets are reception, not this sailing.

Shared responsibility is part of Daniel Solander sails on Cook’s Endeavour as a Linnaean collector. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1768-08-26 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

## Evidence and sources

Linnean Society at https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus treats apostles such as Solander as Linnaeus’s extended collecting system. The Natural History Museum portal at https://www.nhm.ac.uk/ independently holds the Banks and Endeavour natural-history lineage Solander fed.

Official or archival record: Linnean Society — Who was Linnaeus? (https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus; The Linnean Society of London).

## Significance

Labour-extraction path of mid weight for a teacher of imperial collecting. High confidence Solander was Linnaeus’s pupil on Endeavour.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Solander sailed in 1768 as a Linnaean-trained collector on Endeavour. Not established: that Linnaeus ordered Cook’s track, or a unique specimen-count he personally unpacked. Contribution is recorded as He trained Solander. Banks, Cook, Admiralty, and unnamed sailors and indigenous people did the collecting labour. Complex, shared. The impact note is A pupil sent into a British imperial voyage extracted plants and labour under a Linnaean programme, a labour-and-empire path. The dated heading stays Daniel Solander sails on Cook’s Endeavour as a Linnaean collector on 1768-08-26, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Endeavour 1768 is not Species Plantarum 1753 and not a later ICZN article. Mixed effects of Daniel Solander sails on Cook’s Endeavour as a Linnaean collector are separate paths.

The attached driver is [labour-market-tightness](/drivers/labour-market-tightness). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
