# Carl Peter Thunberg collects at the Cape and in Japan under a Linnaean programme

Date: 1770

## The fact

Around 1770 Carl Peter Thunberg, pupil of [Carl Linnaeus](/people/carl-linnaeus), was collecting at the Cape of Good Hope on the way to Japan, a VOC-mediated harvest later printed as Linnaean names. Local labourers and interpreters underwrote the specimens. Thunberg’s later books are his; the method and the Uppsala incentive are Linnaeus’s.

## Context

Swedish naturalists used Dutch imperial logistics they did not own. Inequality is the European power to name and take, not a claim Thunberg ran the VOC. Linnaeus’s correspondence cheered useful exotic plants for Sweden. Do not treat later Japanese herbaria as Linnaeus’s lifetime garden.

## Evidence and sources

Linnean Society at https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus names Thunberg among the apostles. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Carolus-Linnaeus independently notes pupils sent abroad to collect.

Official or archival record: Linnean Society — Who was Linnaeus? (https://www.linnean.org/learning/who-was-linnaeus; The Linnean Society of London).

## Significance

Inequality path of modest-to-mid weight. High confidence on Thunberg as Linnaeus’s pupil in VOC space.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Thunberg collected at the Cape and Japan as a Linnaean apostle in this period. Not established: a unique slave-labour count on any one sheet. Contribution is recorded as He trained Thunberg. Dutch VOC structures and local labour at the Cape and in Japan made the harvest. Complex. The impact note is Apostle collecting through VOC racial orders is an inequality path: European naming rights over others’ plants and work. The dated heading stays Carl Peter Thunberg collects at the Cape and in Japan under a Linnaean programme on 1770-01-01, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Thunberg’s Cape is not Linnaeus’s 1732 Lapland road. Mixed effects of Carl Peter Thunberg collects at the Cape and in Japan under a Linnaean programme are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

The attached driver is [income-inequality](/drivers/income-inequality). The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Carl Peter Thunberg collects at the Cape and in Japan under a Linnaean programme. Naming Carl Linnaeus does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1770-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
