## The fact

In the early 1880s [Tolstoy](/people/leo-tolstoy) volunteered in a Moscow census among poor districts, a dated counting instrument that fed What Then Must We Do?. It is not the 1897 imperial census as a twin and not the 1891 kitchens.

It is one event.

## Context

A novelist counting lodgers is still public social work. Britannica and the estate museum independently place the census volunteering before the major famine campaign.

Leo Tolstoy’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Conventional years are 1828–1910. Surviving public files are later museum pages, collected-works sites, and encyclopedias. Tolstoy did not typeset those later pages. Posthumous museums and editions are evidence, not acts.
