In autumn 1891 [Tolstoy](/people/leo-tolstoy), with family members and local helpers, organised soup kitchens in famine districts of Tula and Ryazan provinces during the 1891–92 crop failure, and publicised the famine against official understatement.

## Context

Attribution is verified as a public campaign he headed, not as a unique national grain stockpile he owned. The estate museum and Britannica independently print the 1891–92 work. Later museum tickets are not this winter.

Leo Tolstoy’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Conventional years are 1828–1910. Surviving public files are later museum pages, collected-works sites, library catalogues, and encyclopedias. Tolstoy did not typeset those later pages.
