In 1855–56 [Tolstoy](/people/leo-tolstoy)’s Sevastopol Sketches were printed in The Contemporary, describing the siege from an officer’s eye. The dated public instrument is that publication cluster. It is not the same Fact as wearing a uniform.

## Context

Reportage can criticise a war the author still served in. Tolstoy.ru and Britannica independently treat the sketches as the first public literary heading of his name. Later collected-works HTML is a carrier, not an 1855 autograph.
