# Luther circulates the Ninety-five Theses on indulgences at Wittenberg

Date: 1517

## The fact

On 31 October 1517 [Martin Luther](/people/martin-luther) issued Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiarum, the Ninety-five Theses, as a Wittenberg theology professor. Whether they were nailed to the Castle Church door is a later image; the dated act is the Latin disputation text and its rapid printing in German lands.

## Context

Albert of Mainz's indulgence campaign, farmed with the Fugger bank and preached by Johann Tetzel, is the immediate money-and-penance machine. Luther wrote as an Augustinian doctor, not as a prince. The theses are academic articles, not a territorial church.

## Evidence and sources

The Hanover English text of the theses and luther.de chronology establish the 1517 Wittenberg act and the printed spread. They do not prove a specific hammer-and-nail minute. Wikipedia is not used as a causal source.

## Significance

Education-adjacent access here is public argument about repentance sold as a financial product. That is not a school budget.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1517 theses text and circulation. Not established: that Luther intended a new church on that day; that nailing is photographically proven. Confidence high on the text, medium on the door.

The event remains dated 1517-10-31. Martin Luther's documented role is: He authored and circulated the theses as Wittenberg professor; printing spread them beyond the door. A public academic challenge to indulgence preaching opened vernacular debate on repentance and money in the church. Later Lutheran churches, later princes, and later national myth are not this event.
