# Luther publishes To the Councilmen of All Cities in Germany that they Establish and Maintain Christian Schools

Date: 1524

## The fact

In 1524 [Luther](/people/martin-luther) published An die Ratsherren aller Städte deutschen Landes, daß sie christliche Schulen aufrichten und halten sollen. It is a completed civic pamphlet.

## Context

Monastic schools were collapsing as convents emptied. He asked councils, not Rome, to fund replacements, including girls.

## Evidence and sources

The 1524 text is standard. It establishes the demand. It does not by itself open a particular gymnasium. Wikipedia is not used as a causal source.

## Significance

Funding path: municipal schools as a Reformation policy, later taken up in Saxon and other visitations.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1524 school address. Not established: that every city obeyed. Confidence high on the pamphlet.

The event remains dated 1524-01-01. Martin Luther's documented role is: He argued in print that civic councils must fund boys' and girls' schools for scripture and languages. A direct printed demand that cities pay for schools is an education-funding path, implemented later by evangelical magistrates. Later Lutheran churches, later princes, and later national myth are not this event. The URLs named above are locators for this Fact only.
