# Hunan Museum places Mawangdui silk books and related objects on a public scientific path

## The fact

From 1974 the provincial museum system treated the Mawangdui finds, including the [Laozi](/people/laozi) silks, as a public scientific exhibit rather than as a closed elite cache. The tomb occupant is not Laozi.

## Context

Public display of excavated books is a cohesion-and-knowledge act in one country. It does not settle authorship. Conservation of silk remains a separate technical problem.

Laozi is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
