By around 2000 a large English-language wellness, leadership, and gift-book market was selling Daodejing maxims and wuwei as personal therapy and executive technique, usually stripped of Waley’s and Lau’s cautions.

## Context

Commodity Daoism concentrates rents in publishers and coaches far from the excavated silks. It also flattens political critique in the book. Medium confidence on magnitudes; high on the market existing.

[Laozi](/people/laozi) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name.
