## The fact

The Column of [Marcus Aurelius](/people/marcus-aurelius) on the Campus Martius, as published by Rome’s heritage administration and as included in the Historic Centre World Heritage landscape, is a spiral of the Marcomannic wars: crossings, killings, deportations.

## Context

Frontier war can be defence and can be slaughter. Both can be true. Cassius Dio’s numbers are a hostile or court-adjacent source and stay on another row.

Marcus Aurelius is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
