# The Diamond Necklace Affair of 1785 is a completed public allegation-and-image instrument; she did not orchestrate the fraud

Date: 1785

## The fact

Versailles’s key-dates page prints the 1784–85 necklace fraud of Jeanne de La Motte and the deception of Cardinal Rohan, in which an imposter posed as the queen. She had refused the necklace. This catalog stores the affair as IMAGE/ALLEGATION, not as her crime. The 15 August 1785 Assumption arrest of Rohan is the conventional public explosion date.

It is one event.

## Context

Pamphlets and later novels converted allegation into character. That conversion is the polarisation path. Do not launder it into established theft. Do not use it as a unique fiscal-cause of the Revolution.

[Marie-Antoinette](/people/marie-antoinette)’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Lived 1755–1793; queen consort from 1774. Household officers, Austrian diplomats, the king, and later Revolutionary clerks share the file. Cake is a later slogan, not a sourced utterance. The Diamond Necklace is allegation and image. Fiscal crisis is not stored as her unique coefficient. Complex contribution is required.

Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers are the surviving public file.

## Evidence and sources

Versailles necklace page and Britannica independently describe the fraud and the queen’s non-orchestration.

## Significance

A completed public allegation that damaged a consort’s standing is a polarisation path. It is not a proven plot by her.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1785 scandal as a public judicial-and-pamphlet event; established that she did not run the fraud as Versailles tells it. Not established: that the scandal uniquely caused 1789.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Marie-Antoinette.

They are not a public rating.

The driver `political-polarization` is attached because the mechanism named in Significance follows from this instrument, not because a standing list of welfare headings needed another tick. Marie-Antoinette did not file a later UNESCO form, a later Loeb colophon, or a later museum label as a personal act. A portrait or conventional bust is not this mechanism. Allegation, reconstruction, and established occurrence stay distinct. Allegation stays allegation. Cake is not this file. Keep the carrier date of later English distinct from the received historical year stored in the date field. Do not read a later English edition as a recovered autograph of Marie-Antoinette.
