In 1531 Blado printed the Discourses on Livy, Machiavelli’s long unpublished argument for mixed government, conflict, and citizen virtue. The Prince of 1532 is a different book. This Fact is the Discourses as a public republican instrument.

## Context

Print made a republican alternative to princely fear copyable in the same decade. Readers still collapse the two books. The catalog must not.
