# Innocent Gentillet publishes Discours contre Machiavel

## The fact

In 1576 Innocent Gentillet issued Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner… contre Nicolas Machiavel, the printed origin of a European ‘Machiavel’ as atheist tyrant-maker. The book is Gentillet’s. This Fact stores that polarising reception, not a new Florentine statute.

## Context

French wars of religion needed a foreign villain. The printed Prince supplied a name. Huguenot and Catholic uses diverged. Neither is a 1498 chancery minute.

[Niccolò Machiavelli](/people/niccolo-machiavelli) is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
