# Florence adopts a militia ordinance associated with Machiavelli’s campaign against mercenaries

In 1506 Florence moved toward a native militia (ordinanza) that [Machiavelli](/people/niccolo-machiavelli) promoted as secretary, against dependence on condottieri. The law is the republic’s. His memorials and office are the documented push.

## Context

A citizen militia can be a republican tool and a conscription burden. Extractive costs sit on other possible rows.

Niccolò Machiavelli is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name.
