In 1924 [Benito Mussolini](/people/benito-mussolini) issued a Preludio al [Machiavelli](/people/niccolo-machiavelli), publicly treating The Prince as a usable Italian statecraft text for the Fascist regime. Machiavelli is the cited dead author, not the speechwriter.

## Context

1924 is not 1532 and not 1498.

Niccolò Machiavelli is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
