# Antonio Blado prints Il Principe in Rome after Machiavelli’s death

Date: 1532

## The fact

In 1532 Antonio Blado issued the first printed Il Principe in Rome, years after [Machiavelli](/people/niccolo-machiavelli)’s death in 1527. The book made a private 1513 treatise copyable as public counsel on how a new prince holds a state. This Fact is the printing, not a 1513 autograph file and not a later dictator’s speech.

## Context

Raison d’état as a portable craft begins here as a book-trade event. Republican Discourses are a different row. Shared labour with scribes, dedicatee Lorenzo de’ Medici (Duke of Urbino), and printers does not erase authorship of the draft and does not make Machiavelli the signer of 20th-century dictatorships.

Niccolò Machiavelli is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Digitised early copies and Britannica’s Prince article independently date the 1532 print. They do not measure a 1532 election series.

## Significance

Worsening path onto [democratic resilience](/drivers/democratic-resilience): a public method for unaccountable rule. High confidence on the printing.

A printed counsel of fear is not a statute. Later Index and Fascist uses are other Facts.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Il Principe was printed in 1532.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, and museums are not converted into extra lifetime acts. The attached driver is democratic-resilience. The welfare reading used in this dossier is worsening. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself. Confidence is stated on the impact path. A later English edition is not a recovered autograph. If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
