# Savonarola is executed weeks before Machiavelli’s chancery election

## The fact

On 23 May 1498 Girolamo Savonarola was hanged and burned in Florence. Machiavelli’s 19 June election followed that polarised purge. He did not light the pyre.

## Context

Niccolò Machiavelli is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name.
