# UK enacts the Safety of Rwanda Act, then scraps the Rwanda asylum scheme (2024)

After the [UK Supreme Court](/organizations/mig-uk-supreme-court) ruled the Rwanda asylum-removal scheme unlawful (15 November 2023), Parliament passed the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act, which received royal assent on 25 April 2024 and legislatively declared Rwanda a safe country; the incoming Labour government scrapped the scheme in July 2024 with only a handful of voluntary relocations having occurred.
