On 4 April 1967 at Riverside Church King delivered ‘Beyond Vietnam,’ naming the United States government ‘the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today’ and tying civil rights to withdrawal. [Johnson](/people/mike-johnson)’s [White House](/organizations/white-house) and parts of the civil-rights establishment treated it as a coalition break.
