# The Birmingham campaign sends schoolchildren into Connor’s police and fire hoses

Date: 1963

## The fact

On 2 May 1963 and following days, the Birmingham campaign marched schoolchildren toward downtown. Connor’s department answered with dogs, hoses, and mass jailing of minors. King and SCLC accepted a tactic that placed children in a known police-violence path to force a camera crisis.

It is one event.

## Context

The same week broke Birmingham’s stall and fed the Civil Rights Act cluster. That gain is a separate improving row.

[Martin Luther King Jr](/people/martin-luther-king-jr).’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

James Bevel proposed the children’s marches. King and SCLC accepted the tactic knowing Eugene Connor’s record. Parents, children, and local clergy shared the risk.
Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

NPS Birmingham campaign pages and the King Institute independently record the children’s marches and Connor’s force.

## Significance

Placing children in a police-violence corridor is a [humanitarian-access](/drivers/humanitarian-access) harm even when the politics later moved.

A hose is not a statute. Keep 1964 as its own instrument.

Placing children in a police-violence corridor is a humanitarian-access harm even when the politics later moved.

## What is established and what is not

Established: children were marched and jailed in May 1963 under SCLC’s campaign. Not established: a complete injury census, or that Bevel acted without King’s acceptance.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Martin Luther King Jr..

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.
