On 11 April 1968 [Johnson](/people/mike-johnson) signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing). King had been murdered on 4 April.

Later memorial politics often assign the Act to him. Assignment is not authorship. Chicago’s weak 1966 paper is his housing instrument; 11 April is not.

King had demanded housing law. He was dead. Johnson and Congress passed Title VIII days later. Scoring the Act as his direct improving deed would launder a killing into a signature.
