# King delivers the March on Washington address before a legally assembled national crowd

Date: 1963

## The fact

On 28 August 1963 the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom filled the Lincoln Memorial grounds.

It is one event.

## Context

A speech is not a statute. It is a public rights claim in the capital the same year as Birmingham. Jobs were in the title; later memory often drops them.

[Martin Luther King Jr](/people/martin-luther-king-jr).’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin built the march. Rustin was kept off some letterheads. [Kennedy](/people/anthony-kennedy)’s [White House](/organizations/white-house) bargained the tone. Shared.
Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

NARA/LOC civil-rights exhibits, the King Institute march encyclopedia, and the New York Times of 29 August 1963 independently record the crowd and the speech.

Official or archival record: Library of Congress — Civil Rights Act of 1964 exhibit (https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/civil-rights-act/civil-rights-act-of-1964.html; Library of Congress).

## Significance

A national permitted assembly for jobs and freedom is a minority-rights path of high confidence.

Randolph and Rustin remain principals. Do not solo the podium.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the 28 August 1963 march occurred and King spoke. Not established: a unique headcount as Factrail’s census, or that the speech enrolled the 1964 Act.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Martin Luther King Jr..

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.

They are not a public rating.
