# King becomes spokesman of the Montgomery Bus Boycott the night after Parks’s arrest is organized as a mass stay-off

Date: 1955

## The fact

On 5 December 1955 Montgomery’s Black riders stayed off the buses and the Montgomery Improvement Association elected King its president. The boycott ran to 20 December 1956, when Browder v. Gayle ended bus segregation in the city.

It is one event.

## Context

He did not board as Parks. He did become the public spokesman and a bomb-target. The legal instrument is the court; the mass instrument is the stay-off.

[Martin Luther King Jr](/people/martin-luther-king-jr).’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Rosa Parks, Jo Ann Robinson, E. D. Nixon, and the Women’s Political Council organized the first day. King was elected MIA president on 5 December. Shared.
Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

King Institute Montgomery encyclopedia and Britannica’s boycott entry independently date 5 December 1955 and the 1956 court end.

## Significance

A year-long mass refusal of a segregated municipal service is a minority-rights path of high confidence.

A boycott is not SCLC. Keep January 1957 separate.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the boycott began 5 December 1955 with King as MIA president and ended after Browder v. Gayle. Not established: that he planned Parks’s arrest.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Martin Luther King Jr..

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.
