# The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is signed after the Selma campaign King helped nationalize

Date: 1965

## The fact

On 6 August 1965 [Johnson](/people/mike-johnson) signed the Voting Rights Act, creating federal preclearance and examiners against discriminatory voting tests. King had nationalized Selma as the demand-event for that statute.

It is one event.

## Context

A statute is Congress’s. The campaign-to-statute lag is weeks, unusually short. Enforcement and later Shelby County are other decades.

[Martin Luther King Jr](/people/martin-luther-king-jr).’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Johnson signed. Katzenbach and the [Department of Justice](/organizations/department-of-justice) wrote. Selma’s pictures and deaths (Jimmie Lee Jackson, James Reeb, Viola Liuzzo) shared the year.
Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers date the row.

## Evidence and sources

NARA’s milestone Voting Rights Act page and Britannica independently date 6 August 1965; King Institute Selma files tie the campaign to the Act.

Official or archival record: National Archives — Voting Rights Act (1965) (https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/voting-rights-act; U.S. National Archives).

## Significance

A federal voting-rights enforcement statute is a [democratic-resilience](/drivers/democratic-resilience) instrument of high confidence.

Do not fold 2013 litigation into 1965.

A federal voting-rights enforcement statute is a democratic-resilience instrument of high confidence.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the VRA was signed 6 August 1965 after Selma. Not established: that King drafted section 5, or that every county immediately registered.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Martin Luther King Jr..

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date, signatory, or non-occurrence; a demonstrated forgery; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of other causes.

They are not a public rating.
