# Suu Kyi becomes State Counsellor Date: 2016 ## The fact On 6 April 2016 [Aung San Suu Kyi](/people/aung-san-suu-kyi) became State Counsellor, the completed de facto civilian head because the 2008 Constitution barred her from the presidency. ## Context [Htin Kyaw](/people/htin-kyaw) was president.
