# Monti government adopts 'Salva Italia' austerity decree

On 4 December 2011 the [Monti](/people/mario-monti) cabinet adopted the 'Save Italy' decree, formally Decree-Law 201/2011 on urgent measures for growth, equity and consolidation of public finances. It combined tax rises, spending cuts and a sweeping pension reform, and came into force on 6 December 2011 before parliament converted it into law.
