On 16 November 2011 the economist and former European commissioner [Mario Monti](/people/mario-monti) was sworn in at the head of a technocratic government after [Silvio Berlusconi](/people/silvio-berlusconi) resigned during the eurozone debt crisis. Monti presented a cabinet made up of non-party experts.
