## The fact

On 3 January 1925 [Mussolini](/people/benito-mussolini) told the Chamber he accepted political, moral, and historical responsibility for the climate that produced Matteotti’s murder and dared deputies to unseat him. The Aventine secession had emptied opposition benches. Dictatorship became explicit policy.

## Context

This is the ownership speech, not a confession in a criminal court. Exceptional laws of 1925–26 followed. The king did not dismiss him.
